Retirement Policies at ASIJ

From 1964-2001:

Retirement will normally be at the end of the school year in which the teacher reaches the age of 60. During the school year in which the teacher reaches age 59, and thereafter, new contracts will be issued for one year only. By October 1 of the school year in which the teacher reaches age 59, the teacher shall request a waiver by the administration if he/she wishes to continue employment beyond the school year in which he/she reaches age 60. Such waiver shall be requested annually, if continued employment is desired.

In April 2001:

Retirement will normally be at the end of the school year in which the teacher/staff member reaches the age of 60.  The only exceptions to this policy will be determined by the school's need for special skills or expertise.  The Administrative Council will make the final decision on any exceptions.

During the school year in which the teacher/staff member reaches age 59, and thereafter, new contracts will be issued for one year only.  By October 1 of the school year in which the teacher/staff member reaches age 59, the teacher/staff member shall request a waiver by the administration if he/she wishes to continue employment beyond the school year in which he/she reaches age 60.  Such waiver shall be requested annually.

In November 2001:  Non-written change in policy to make age 60 a mandatory retirement age.  This decision was actually made much earlier as Mr. Cooper was telling applicants in January 2001 that the job ended at 60.
